Cliff stabilization at Itzurun Beach
The Itzurun cliffs are on one of the most spectacular areas of the coast of Guipúzcoa, in northern Spain, on the Bay of Biscay. The coastal line consists of huge vertical cliffs of sandy and clay soils that are extremely unstable and which can reach heights of up to 150 meters.
This spectacular formation is the result of a geological phenomenon called flysh, formed by millions of years of sea erosion. Flysch typically consists of an alternation of hard rock layers and other softer rock layers that erode more easily resulting in hard layers loosing support, breaking and coming off.
